When performing at one of the most famous music festivals in the world, they lock eyes with you in the crowd, sparking a whirlwind romance on the European leg of their sold-out tour.

Director Michael Showalter brings new life to the age-old fantasy with a film called “The Idea of You,” which is set to release on Amazon Prime. Based on a 2017 novel, the movie follows the story of Solène Marchand, a 40-year-old art gallery owner and divorced mother of one, who falls for Hayes Campbell, a 24-year-old member of a fictional boy band. The film explores themes of identity, individuality, and the struggles faced by women after motherhood.

Costume designer Jacqueline Demetrio carefully crafted Solène’s wardrobe to reflect her character: sophisticated, cool, and not trying to look young, but evolving with time. Brands like Chloé, Isabel Marant, Etro, Gabriella Hearst, Valentino, and vintage Chanel were chosen to create Solène’s fashion identity as a successful gallery owner.

For Hayes, Demetrio took inspiration from artists like Harry Styles and Matty Healy to create a mix of elevated classics and streetwear. The aim was to capture the style of a young musician at his level.

The age gap between Solène and Hayes is visually represented through their clothes, emphasizing their star-crossed love story. The film challenges the cliché of the glamorous celebrity and their ordinary love interest, allowing Hathaway’s character to be stylish and well-dressed throughout.

“The Idea of You” offers a fresh take on the fantasy of a romance between a regular person and a famous star. It delves into the complexities of relationships and the journey of self-discovery for women after becoming mothers, all while showcasing stunning fashion choices for its characters.
